Where’d Spring Go?

April 7, 2009

I’m dragging my feet today and dealing with office tasks, rather than running right out the door. It’s cold out there! Such is the joy of spring, as a landscape designer in Virginia. It’s almost as if today happened just to reinforce my previous post about safe planting dates in Virginia! The Weather Channel is forecasting a low of 27 tonight, so we’re definitely not in the clear yet. Yesterday was wet, but a great day for planting- overcast and not too windy, and nowhere near as cold as today.april-6-2009-11

The photo is of a Tamukeyama Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Tamukeyama’) that we’re planting next to a waterfall. As you can see it’s leafing out beautifully, which is a testament to just how tough plants are. I bought this tree last summer when the project started, and it sat out in a pot until a few weeks ago, when the waterfalls were installed.april-6-2009-2

To me, that just looks like the promise of spring- and all the warmth and excitement that comes with the season. Every time I get cold this morning, I’ll grab my coffee and take another peek at the buds.

Time to plant something.
